Project Accountant

Job Title: Project Accountant

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for day-to-day financial accounting of construction projects supporting the Controller, accounting department and the work of the operations teams.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely and accurate project transaction postings such as cost, billing, change orders, budget adjustments, transfers, etc.
  • Monitor and report on project progression at monthly project WIP review meetings.
  • Analyze project expenses and budget-to-actual reports with the construction project managers to proactively identify potential cost overruns and/or financial risks.
  • Monitor project cash flow and aged receivables.
  • Coordinate project closeouts with project managers.
  • Assist with the month-end close process ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.
  • Assist with special projects and perform ad hoc project analysis as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work at a high proficiency level with a construction ERP system (CMiC experience highly desirable).
  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with close attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both verbal and written with ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals including coworkers, leadership, and external parties.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to be able to analyze issues and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage confidential information.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite programs, in particular Excel: pivot tables, Lookups and reports.

 

Education and Experience:

  • BS in Accounting, Finance, or another related field.
  • Three (3) plus year’s experience in commercial construction and/or cost accounting.
  • Extensive understanding of project life cycle, construction costing & billing methods, WIP schedule, earned revenue, retainage, change orders, certified payrolls, project budgets, contract compliance, and construction reporting metrics.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • May stoop, kneel, or bend on an occasional basis.
  • May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on occasional basis.
